Columbus Technical College was the first college in the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) to have a student test for the newly-implemented HiSET exam and is now congratulating not one but two HiSET graduates. Twenty-two-year old Zvi Hare and 19-year-old Madelyn Peed of Columbus received their HiSET diplomas on November 2nd. Hare scored a perfect score in Social Studies and passed all other sections with a “college ready” status.
Both students’ exams costs were covered by the TCSG Office of Adult Education with Columbus Technical College awarding the students gas cards and book bags full of school supplies to help them start their college careers.
Hare and Peed work in the service industry – one in retail and the other in hospitality. Both are shift workers who say they want to work toward a long-term career in business. Peed wants to focus her attention on an accounting degree while Hare hopes to pursue a broader business degree that he can use as a foundation for future pathways. Both will be starting as Columbus Technical College students in January and hope to be Federal Work Study students employed at Columbus Tech.
Columbus Tech’s Vice President of Adult Education April Hopson said, “While getting to this place was a team effort, most of the credit goes to Mr. Hare and Ms. Peed for their unwavering commitment and enthusiasm. I want the community to know we have multiple options for our students and this success story shows that opportunities are happening every day at Columbus Technical College.”
Columbus Technical College offers three ways for students looking to earn their high school equivalency. The traditional GED® exam, the new HiSET® exam, and an option exclusive to the Technical College System of Georgia – CareerPlus HSE. Columbus Tech is one of just a handful of schools within the TCSG that is a pilot for both of the newest pathways. For information on all the options, visit the adult education page on the Columbus Tech website, call 706-641-5628, or email adulted@columbustech.edu.
